Protoss Ultimate 4 Gate Timing Attack

Protoss Ultimate 4 Gate Timing Attack

Jul 19, 2010

The 4 Gateway Semi Rush build is by far one of the most powerful Protoss build orders. Not only does it hold the potential of ending the game in the early stages it also set’s you up nicely for the middle to late game. I personally use the 4 gate build and love it the variety of different units it allows you to produce. Check out the build order directly below or a video of the build by SpookyCaster.

  • I personally get my Pylon at 10 supply but getting it at 9 or 10 will work just as well. Once the pylon finishes just keep building probes. To speed this up make sure to Chrono Boost your nexus.
  • At 13 supply throw down your first Gateway, and send the probe that built it to go scouting for your opponent. Once the Gateway is around 3/4′s of the way done (around 15 to 17 supply) build another Pylon and a Assimilator. Remember to keep pumping out dem probes.
  • Once your Gateway is finished, build a zealot and throw down a Cybernetics Core. Put 2 probes in gas.
  • At 22 supply build another pylon to support your incoming troops. Around that time your core should finish, when it does do two things. Put up another Assimilator and research warp gate.
  • When you hit 28 supply put up 2 more gateways, and at 30 you should have enough to make your 4th gate :) . Turn all your gateways into warp gates and start massing up your army. You should be building a new pylon everytime you warp in some units. This way you wont have to worry about ever being supply blocked.
  • Within a few moments you should have enough units to begin your push. I usually push at 45 supply and build a pylon near their base for the purpose of warping in units. Even if my attack fails I will have control of the center of the map and can control the game from there.

Build Order

9 Pylon

13 Gateway

15 Pylon & Assimilator

16 1st Zealot

17 Cybernetics

22 Pylon

23 Assimilator & Warp gate technology

27 3 More Gateways

Build Tips

1. Use your first zealot to block the ramp or stop any scouting units.

2. Constantly be building units out of your first gateway.

3. When building pylons try to put them all around your base. This will give you a larger vision and give you a headsup if your enemy ever try’s to sneak through your back door.

  1. Seems to be an awesome strat, I still have a few questions though…
    1) whats the most probes that you’d recommend having on harvesting crystal in your initial base?
    2) and whats the most probes u’d recommend having on one assimilator?
    3) do you think this is a good strat to start off with in a 3 or 4 way free for all game?
    4) what the heck is a good counter for Thor’s late game as protoss? (my mate built like 5 of them yesterday while we were playing an FFA game and they tore me a new asshole.)
    Cheers man,
I’ll be checking back here for sure :)

Hey Dima thanks for the comment :) .

    1. On my initial base I keep pumping out probes until I make my first push which is around when I warp in my first 4 stalkers. Then after the push I build a nexus and transfer over 8 of my probes to it. As for the crystal itself I would recommend 3 probes to a crystal patch.
    2. I do something a bit strange when mining gas on this build. At first I build both of my assimilators and put 2 probes on each of them. This will give me just enough gas to afford warp gate technology and my first few stalkers. After I warp in my first set I put another probe on each, to make it a total of three.
    3. I personally play protoss and probably use this strategy the most often. I love how versatile it can be and I usually find myself finishing off everyone in a free for all or dominating ranked matches.
    4. Haha thors can be very difficult to counter if you have entered the late game but I would personally just use immortals to focus down the thor and use my stalkers and zealots to kill the units supporting it.

Hey man if you have any more questions about the build don’t hesitate to ask. I’d love to answer them. Appreciate it mate,

    Yeah mate,

Stopping a early rush from zerg can be hard enough no matter the build haha. The first thing to do if your worried about a early rush is to scout out your zerg player. If the spawning pool is a bit late then most likely your safe from the rush, but I still chrono boost out my first zealots because zerg players always seem to throw 6 zerglings at you. Usually 2 zealots can stop any early 6 ling harass if you use your probes a little offensively if the lings are in your mineral line.

Now if your talking about a all out rush from your opponent the best course of action is to block of your ramp completely with 2 gateways, then build a quick forge and put up a cannon or 2. If you stick to the build and get warp gate technology the blocked off ramp will serve as protection from ling run by’s, and you can warp your units past it.

In the end just make sure you thoroughly scout out a your opponent so you are prepared for any rush they throw at you.

  4. Sometimes I just think that people write and dont really have much to say. Not so here
